As spectators returned to the stadium, it was a night to remember as it seemed like football normality for a promising Patriots club after two weeks of training camp activity and only a handful of padded sessions in preparation for the new year.
This was the first preseason game of the year, and while we can’t overreact to the first time either team tackled someone, we learned a lot about the 2021 Patriots.
It wasn’t a beautiful win for the New England Patriots in their first preseason game against the Washington Football Team. However, neither the Patriots’ offense nor their defense was imposing. In the end, New England prevailed 22-13.
A 2-point conversion from Steven Montez to Antonio Gandy-Golden that was first declared a successful pass was reversed as an incompletion in the closing minutes.
New England Patriots: Assisting on the ground A 91-yard touchdown by Rhamondre Stevenson sealed the victory in the last minute of the game. His two Patriots touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter when the starters had already left. Both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Cam Newton played two series each. This came after a pair of incomplete passes, including one in which Newton almost fumbled while being tackled by Chase Young, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. That snap ate the left tackle, Isaiah Wynn, to death, destroying him. A 10-play, 43-yard drive concluded with a field goal for Newton’s next series. Holding penalties were committed in the red zone, and the Patriots were penalized. Because of the delay, the first down marker seemed a long way away. Isn’t that what you’re thinking?
When securing victory against Washington, Jones used his “death by a thousand cuts” strategy. My expectations for the rookie were mainly met. When he initially came to Foxborough this spring, he enjoyed checking down and working the short area of the field. Mostly he was getting his bearings, as I had predicted. Overreactions will be plenty after the first preseason game, in which the starters barely played three series if that. New England’s outside linebackers, on the other hand, looked like they were for serious. Matthew Judon had a great third-down tackle on Peyton Barber during the run game, and he also had a good pass rush with at least two pressures.
As a result of Judon’s absence for a few plays, Josh Uche had a chance to be a heat-seeking missile for a few plays with the starting. As in training camp and spring practice, Uche played with the same tenacious pace that made him a liability.

Let’s take a look at a few notable players.
