Billie Eilish News: “I’m appalled and embarrassed and I mean I’ve said that word before,” she added “No matter how ignorant I was and how old I was at the time, there’s no excuse that it was hurtful. And for that I’m sorry.” Billie Eilish said after an old video came out of her uttering a racist slur in a song.
“I adore you all, and many of you have asked me to address this. And this is something I WANT to address because I’m being branded as something I’m not,” Eilish stated in a message shared on her Instagram story.
Eilish wrote an apologetic message on Instagram Stories claiming that she is “appalled” and “embarrassed” for mouthing the words to a song when she was 13 or 14.
“There’s a video clip floating around of me when I was 13 or 14 and I mouthed a phrase from a song that I didn’t realize at the time was a disparaging slur used towards members of the Asian community,” she wrote.
“This song was the only time I’d ever heard that word because no one in my family ever used it around me.” She apologized and claimed that “nothing excuses the fact that it was cruel.”
During last week, the footage circulated and reached more than one million viewers. A version made by a TikTok user named @lcxvy. The user claimed she’s a big admirer of Eilish in the follow-up posts. Anyway, she wanted Eilish to deal with the recordings.
“I did not intend for any of my acts to have caused damage to anyone, and it completely hurts my heart that it is now being branded in a way that could cause grief to people hearing it,” Eilish concludes.
She goes on to say that she has tried to utilize her popularity and position to advocate for inclusiveness, compassion, tolerance, and equality.
