Call of Duty WW2 Vanguard: Images for the upcoming Call of Duty game have just emerged online, giving us a taste of what to anticipate in the franchise’s future. Activision has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty: Vanguard, which contains themes indicating the game is set during WWII. It depicts ancient weaponry, a beach littered with the remnants of planes from the time, and woodland in Germany, among other things.
The news comes as Activision Blizzard, and specifically Overwatch creator Blizzard, has been under fire for a culture of sexual harassment resulting from a lawsuit brought by the state of California. Employees have since organized a walkout, and several high-profile Blizzard developers, including president J. Allen Brack, have departed the company.
During a press conference last week, Sledgehammer studio chief Aaron Halon began with a statement on the situation:
“The shared stories of pain and suffering are devastating. We love making games; it’s what we do, it’s our life’s work, and it’s something we’re really enthusiastic about. But, more importantly, we’re humans, and we’re here for one other, working together and looking out for one another in good and terrible times. As a result, on behalf of Sledgehammer Games and the entire Call of Duty: Vanguard team, any kind of abuse violates all we stand for as a studio. Everyone, regardless of title, role, gender, orientation, or colour, should be treated with decency, respect, and equality.
Call of Duty WW2:While we cannot comment on the case, I can say that we are dedicated to ensuring all team members feel secure, accepted, and appreciated. Please know that these ideas and acts are at the forefront of our minds and will remain so in the future. They speak to the fundamental principles that define who we are and who we want to be.”
Vanguard’s single-player campaign, which focuses on the origins of the special forces and will be told from many points of view, is at the heart of the game, and the Sledgehammer narrative team sci-fi novelist Tochi Onyebuchi is working on the plot. According to Sledgehammer, the story will explore “the hidden stories of international warriors who created Task Force One, altering the face of history and laying the groundwork for special forces as we know it.” It will contain characters based on real-life people, such as Lt.Polina Petrova is modelled after Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, often known as “Lady Death.”
Aside from the main campaign, there will be multiplayer with 20 maps and game types at launch, including “Champion Hill,” in which players battle single or in squads of two or three. Black Ops company Treyarch will also build a Zombies mode to tie into the previous zombie tale from Black Ops Cold War.
At the same time, Raven Software creates a Vanguard map for the battle royale spinoff Warzone. According to Activision, when the new map is released later this year, it will be accompanied by a “new anti-cheat mechanism.” The crossover will be a “all-new metaverse connecting Vanguard, Black Ops Cold War, and Modern Warfare,” according to the studio.
Call of Duty: Vanguard will be released on November 5th on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and PC.
