Trump speech in NC, East Coast heat wave, Belmont Stakes: 5 things to know this weekend

Date:

All together there were 5 things this weekend that you should know.

Former President Donald Trump will return to the political stage on Saturday at the North Carolina Republican Party state convention in Greenville, after spending more than three months behind closed doors amid Republican turmoil, an extended social media ban, and criminal investigations into his past conduct. This will be Trump’s first broadcast address since his visit to Orlando, Florida on February 28 at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Trump claimed Friday it is “a tremendous pleasure to be speaking at the North Carolina GOP convention,” in a written statement that rehashed unsubstantiated claims of a “fraudulent” election in 2020. This address comes only one day after Facebook declared that Trump’s account will be banned until January 7, 2023.

This weekend, the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic will be scorched by a heat wave.

Temperatures are expected to surge to mid-summer levels between Saturday and Sunday, a week after a chilly and wet Memorial Day weekend in much of the country. High temperatures in the 90s are forecast for at least three days in major East Coast cities, including Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. “This weekend will be very different than the previous weekend,” according to AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno. “We anticipate temperatures to rise by 30, 35, and even 40 degrees this Saturday and Sunday compared to last Saturday and Sunday,” he stated.

Essential Quality is the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes in 2021.

The Belmont Stakes, which takes place on Saturday, may lack the excitement of a Triple Crown race or the intrigue surrounding Bob Baffert, who has been banned indefinitely by the New York Racing Association, but it is shaping up to be the most competitive of the big three and one of the best races of the year. Todd Pletcher, who owns three horses in the event, stated, “It’s a difficult group.” “It’s an excellent field. Horses are coming out of the appropriate races, in my opinion.” Essential Quality is the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes after finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby. Essential Quality, coached by Brad Cox, was assigned to the No. 2 post slot in a field of eight. The field also includes Preakness winner Rombauer, but Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, who faces disqualification following a second failed drug test, will not be participating. The event will be broadcast on NBC at 6:49 p.m., with post time slated for 6:49 p.m.

The Kennedy Center Honors programme was restructured in response to the epidemic.

During a two-hour extravaganza broadcast on CBS Sunday (8 p.m. ET/PT), the Kennedy Center Honors will be awarded to five entertainment giants. Dick Van Dyke, who has won Emmys, Grammys, and Tony Awards, as well as iconic country singer Garth Brooks, multi-hyphenate Debbie Allen, singer/activist Joan Baez, and violinist Midori, were honored late last month. Due to COVID-19, the big ceremony that is typically held first has been postponed. The event was thus unable to take place in front of the usual big crowd at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Instead, it has to be redesigned to accommodate pandemic situations, as the CBS series will show. Gloria Estefan, a Kennedy Center honoree, will host the event, which will include a series of surprise guests, talks, and songs.

Fauci, the first women to come alongside at a vaccination clinic as a show of support

Republicans’ assaults on the nation’s top federal infectious diseases expert have gone into overdrive after the revelation of a trove of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s emails this week. Fauci, who is also President Joe Biden’s pandemic adviser, has been chastised on conservative news outlets for lying to the American people about COVID-19’s origins. Republican calls for his resignation have become stronger in Congress. Despite the right’s attacks, the White House has stated unequivocally that it supports Fauci. Jen Psaki, Biden’s press secretary, commended Fauci as an “undeniable asset” this week, while Biden himself told reporters on Friday that he was “extremely confidence in Dr. Fauci.” Fauci will accompany first lady Jill Biden for a visit to a COVID-19 immunization clinic in New York City on Sunday afternoon as a show of solidarity, according to the White House. On Monday, the two will appear on Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest’s morning talk show.
