England vs Germany – Euro 2020 Round of 16

Date:

England vs Germany – Euro 2020 Round of 16. Raheem Sterling’s and Harry Kane’s goals powered England into Euro 2020’s quarter-finals at a euphoric Wembley Stadium. The Fans appeared to think that it is “coming home” after defeating Germany for the first time in a major tournament since 1966.

Jurgen Klinsmann after the final whistle on BBC One:

“You have to recognize the moment. This is England’s moment. You’ve got to realize if you go through the quarter-final, you play a semi-final here, and you maybe have a sell-out crowd in the final. It’s not going to be an easy road to the final, but it’s doable. Now they have shown the belief, Harry Kane broke through, and the energy is high. You’ve got to take advantage of that and win this all.”

England was prepared to be counter-attack but never put too much pressure on. Until Sterling scored in the 75th minute following excellent build-up play, including Jack Grealish, the replacement helped England reverse the tide. He would then assist Kane to score his first goal of the campaign, putting Gareth Southgate’s team in a match between either Ukraine or Sweden in Rome.

In the 81st Minute, Havertz sent a pass into Thomas Muller, who found himself one on one with Pickford, but he missed the bottom left post with his effort. Muller immediately sank on his knees, realizing he’d just blown a tremendous opportunity for Germany.

The return of the Aston Villa man, who justified the blind loyalty of a portion of supporters from England with the ideal finishing product, was two assists.

Alan Shearer on BBC One for this historical moment:

“The manager deserves huge credit for sticking with Sterling. There was a lot of criticism flying around before the tournament, and when the manager sticks with you you’ve got to go out and perform, and nobody’s performed better than Raheem Sterling in this tournament for England. He’s been their go-to guy for the games.”

England today went to Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, and Bukayo Saka with only three attack-minded players, so Gareth Southgate has placed apparent emphasis on keeping things firm and defensive. However, the Three Lions, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount, and Phil Foden, have many talented players on the bench.
